From a landmark harbor transformation to beloved community traditions, there’s plenty to look forward to in Dana Point over the next six months.
Dana Point has always held a special place along Southern California’s coastline. Known for its dramatic ocean views, world-class whale watching, beautiful beaches, and relaxed coastal atmosphere, this seaside community offers a lifestyle that feels distinctly different from its Orange County neighbors.
Now, Dana Point is entering an exciting new chapter.
With the ambitious Dana Point Harbor revitalization well underway, new dining and shopping experiences on the horizon, and a calendar full of community celebrations, the next six months offer plenty of reasons to rediscover everything that makes Dana Point special.
Whether you’re a longtime resident, considering a move to the area, or simply looking for a reason to spend more time by the water, here’s what’s happening in Dana Point.
Dana Point Harbor Revitalization: A New Era for a Coastal Landmark

One of the most significant developments in Dana Point’s recent history is the nearly $600 million transformation of Dana Point Harbor.
The comprehensive project aims to modernize the harbor’s infrastructure, enhance public access, introduce new dining and retail destinations, and create more inviting spaces for residents and visitors to enjoy the waterfront.
Importantly, the revitalization is designed to preserve the harbor’s maritime identity and coastal charm.
What’s Already Been Completed?
Visitors are beginning to see the results of years of planning and construction.
A major milestone arrived in July 2025 with the opening of a new three-level parking structure featuring 984 parking spaces, improved access from Golden Lantern, electric vehicle charging stations, and dedicated boater amenities.
The marina transformation has also made significant progress. Eleven phases of dock and slip improvements have been completed, bringing modern infrastructure and upgraded facilities to portions of the harbor.
What’s Coming Next?
Construction of the new waterfront commercial buildings began in February 2026, and additional redevelopment of the Wharf area is anticipated to begin this fall.
The long-term vision includes:
- Approximately 120,000 square feet of restaurant and retail space
- Roughly 50 new restaurants and retailers
- Waterfront dining with expansive outdoor patios
- A chef-driven food hall called The Boathouse
- Enhanced pedestrian walkways, gathering spaces, and public art
- A waterfront boardwalk designed to improve connections between Doheny State Beach and Baby Beach
- New educational, recreational, and community-oriented spaces
The revitalization also includes planned improvements to the harbor’s hospitality offerings.
For residents, these enhancements promise something particularly valuable: more opportunities to enjoy the waterfront as part of everyday life, whether that’s meeting friends for dinner, taking a morning walk, or enjoying an afternoon on the water.
And while construction continues, Dana Point Harbor remains open for business, with restaurants, marine excursions, whale watching, and other waterfront activities continuing to welcome visitors.
Holiday Magic Returns to Dana Point
As fall gives way to winter, Dana Point transforms into one of Orange County’s most festive coastal communities.
November 26, 2026 | Dana Point Turkey Trot
The 49th Annual Dana Point Turkey Trot returns Thanksgiving morning, bringing thousands of runners, walkers, and spectators to the harbor.
With 5K and 10K distances, a combination race, and a children’s Gobble Wobble, the event has become a beloved Thanksgiving tradition.
Few holiday races can compete with a course that winds through one of Southern California’s most picturesque harbors.
November 12, 2026 – January 10, 2027 | Dana Point Harbor Holiday Lights
Dana Point Harbor’s annual holiday display returns with more than 700,000 LED lights illuminating the waterfront.
Festive sculptures, illuminated palm trees, and whimsical photo opportunities create a magical setting for evening strolls, family outings, and holiday gatherings.
For many local families, visiting the harbor lights is as much a holiday tradition as decorating the Christmas tree.
December 11–13, 2026 | 51st Annual Boat Parade of Lights
One of Dana Point’s most anticipated holiday celebrations returns for three festive evenings.
This year’s theme, “Dana Point’s Harboritaville,” brings a tropical twist to the holidays as elaborately decorated boats cruise through the harbor beginning at 6:30 p.m. each evening.
Visitors can enjoy the spectacle from the waterfront or reserve a spot aboard a holiday cruise for an unforgettable view from the water.
It’s a perfect example of how Dana Point blends its nautical heritage with a strong sense of community.
Winter Whale Watching: Nature’s Greatest Coastal Show

Dana Point is recognized as a premier whale-watching destination, and winter brings one of the most extraordinary natural events along the California coast.
Beginning in December and continuing into spring, migrating gray whales travel along the coastline, offering opportunities to observe these magnificent marine mammals in their natural habitat.
Local whale-watching excursions provide residents and visitors with a front-row seat to the migration, while coastal overlooks offer opportunities to watch from shore.
For those who call Dana Point home, access to these experiences is one of the many reminders that coastal living is about far more than beautiful real estate.
March 5–7, 2027 | The 56th Annual Festival of Whales
One of Dana Point’s signature celebrations returns in early March.
The Festival of Whales honors the annual gray whale migration with a weekend of marine education, family activities, entertainment, and community events.
Visitors can look forward to whale-watching excursions, educational exhibits, live music, local makers, and activities celebrating Dana Point’s connection to the ocean.
The festival is a wonderful opportunity to experience the community’s commitment to marine conservation, environmental education, and coastal heritage.
The Everyday Appeal of Dana Point Living
While the harbor transformation and seasonal events are generating excitement, much of Dana Point’s appeal lies in the experiences available throughout the year.
A morning walk along the coastal trails, an afternoon at Salt Creek Beach, a paddleboard outing at Baby Beach, or dinner overlooking the Pacific are all part of the lifestyle that draws people to this community.
The Lantern District offers a lively collection of restaurants, boutiques, and neighborhood gathering spots, while Dana Point’s distinctive residential neighborhoods provide a variety of coastal living opportunities.
From the ocean-view homes of Monarch Beach and the Headlands to the established neighborhoods of Dana Hills and Capistrano Beach, Dana Point offers something for buyers at many different stages of life.
And with the harbor revitalization continuing to take shape, the community’s amenities and public spaces are poised to become even more compelling.
What Does Dana Point’s Transformation Mean for Real Estate?
Major community investments naturally attract attention from homeowners, prospective buyers, and real estate investors.
The harbor revitalization represents a substantial commitment to Dana Point’s future, with the potential to strengthen the community’s appeal as both a residential destination and a place to visit.
Enhanced waterfront amenities, improved infrastructure, and expanded dining and recreational options can all influence how buyers perceive a neighborhood and the lifestyle it offers.
Of course, infrastructure improvements don’t automatically translate into higher property values. Real estate performance ultimately depends on factors such as location, property condition, available inventory, financing conditions, and buyer demand.
That’s why understanding the nuances of Dana Point’s individual neighborhoods remains so important.
For buyers, it’s about identifying properties that align with both their lifestyle and long-term goals. For homeowners considering a sale, it’s about understanding how evolving community amenities may influence buyer interest and how to position a property effectively.
Looking Ahead: Dana Point’s Best Days Are Still to Come
Dana Point has always been defined by its relationship with the ocean.
The harbor revitalization builds upon that legacy, creating opportunities for new experiences while honoring the traditions and natural beauty that make this coastal community so desirable.
Over the next six months, residents and visitors will have plenty to celebrate, from festive harbor lights and holiday boat parades to the spectacular annual migration of gray whales.
And beyond the seasonal celebrations, the continuing harbor transformation offers a glimpse into Dana Point’s future.
For those fortunate enough to call Dana Point home, the best part isn’t simply visiting these attractions. It’s having them woven into everyday life.
